The Black man’s MBA
Hip hop executive and music manager Chris Lighty of Violator Management talks about the Black persons’ MBA–earned in “hell.”
“Lighty grew up during the 1980s in the gritty Bronx River Projects surrounded by crack and crime. He was one of six children brought up by a single mom working two jobs to feed the family. He saw his best friend, DJ Scott La Rock, murdered before his eyes, the victim of a trivial spat. Starting a business was “the only option,” he said.”

The death of Scot La Rock is one of the most pivotal times in hip-hop I feel. Boogie Down Productions was just reaching its peak and KRS One was hands down the undispiuted champion of hip hop. After Scot dided it changed his whole demeanor. I love D Nice as much as the next dude but with the weight of KRS One giving a black militant vibe anchored with Chuck D and PE the genre of hip hop which is leader driven would have had another twist. KRS One bridged the gap between NWA and Public Enemy and Scot La Rock made the sound Criminal Minded.
